Welcome
At the meeting of The international ALS alliance in 2004 in Philadelphia, Gudjon Sigurdson from Iceland and Jens Harhoff from Denmark met. This meeting initiated what is today the Nordic ALS/MND Alliance.
They got together during the evenings and their conversations quite naturally concentrated on their mutual conditions and on the fact that Jens lived with a respirator. In Iceland they had no experience of living with both ALS and a respirator, and Gudjon of course wanted to know everything about this subject.
In short, The Muscular Association of Denmark “Muskelsvindfonden” - helped us to arrange a meeting at their wonderful holiday and congress centre, Musholm. That was the first meeting of our Nordic ALS/MND alliance.
It was a very successful meeting with a sociable atmosphere. There were about 25 participants from Iceland, 2 from Finland, 20 from Denmark and 1 from Norway.
Our aims are:
- To ensure the best possible treatment for all ALS persons in the Nordic countries.
- To inform and increase awareness of the international ALS/MND alliance “Partnership program” and extend cooperation between the countries of the Nordic region.
- Through social events, to create personal friendships across borders, with the purpose of increasing the awareness of treatments available in the different countries.
- It is our hope that all countries in the east sea region will join the international alliance of ALS/MND associations, and we hope to extend the Nordic cooperation to other countries in the region.
- To work for increased research and treatment in the Nordic countries.
At the meeting we decided that the meeting in 2006 should be in Iceland, 2007 in Norway, 2008 in Sweden and 2008 in Finland.
The 2007 conference will be held at the Quality Hotel Gardermoen, 50 kilometers north of Oslo. The conference programme will be held Monday the 24th of September and Tuesday the 25th of September. The conference topics will be:
- ALS/MND and communication
- Quality of life with the diagnosis ALS/MND
- News from recent research
- What do we want the Nordic ALS/MND alliance to be?
The target groups for the conference are ALS/MND patients, relatives, health personnel, public services and other interested parties. We are all looking very much forward to seeing you all in September.
